During the week ending April 23, 2005 (week 16), sentinel physicians reported 17 cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) per 1000 patient visits (see ILI graph).
Since February 17, 2005 when the antiserum of the new variant became available, 420 influenza A isolates have been characterized of which 328 (78%) were A/California/7/04 and 92 (22%) were A/Fujian/411/02.Of the 151 that were influenza B, 126 (83%) were B/Shanghai/361/02-like and 25 (17%) B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like virus.
During the one week period from April 17 to April 23, 7 reports of laboratory confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations in 11 centres were reported through the IMPACT (Immunization Monitoring Program Active) network.
