The Aquarius Festival was a music and cultural festival organised by the Australian Union of Students and held in Nimbin, New South Wales in 1973. The event had a permanent effect on the economy of Nimbin, as many hippie Festival participants decided to remain in the district which was previously a dairying region in severe decline.


Sometime after the event there was a schism in the hippie community with one faction remaining in Nimbin and the other moving to the coastal area of Byron Bay, which has also had a big ecomomic impact on that town.
