Encyclopedia > Aquila Legis

The AQUILA LEGIS is the first and premier fraternity of the Ateneo De Manila School of Law. The fraternity was founded by 21 junior and senior students in 1949 becoming the first fraternity in the Philippines with a Latin name. Aquila Legis in English means "Eagle of the Law", but is more commonly interpreted as "Legal Eagle". Through six decades, the fraternity has inducted over 1500 members, 90% of whom are members of the Philippine Bar and include Cabinet Secretaries, Congressmen, Justices, and Ambassadors. The academic excellence required of every Aquilan has produced over 40 lawyers who reached the Top Ten of the Bar Examinations, four of whom placed number one namely: Vicente Solis, Virgilio Gesmundo, Gregorio Batillier Jr., and Januario Soller Jr. It has been the policy of the Ateneo De Manila University School of Law not to recognize fraternities and sororities but this has not deterred the resident and alumni Aquilans from being actively involved in the school's many endeavors. The fraternity does not make any apologies for its strong fraternal bonds, which on more than one occasion has been accused of causing factionalism on campus. In truth, its traditions are marked with tolerance and humaneness. For the fraternity has devoted itself not only to the good and interest/s of its members, but to continuous and dedicated service to the community. Its record speaks for itself and, despite undeserved affronts, cannot be overcome. Through the years, the Aquila Legis has lived up to its ideals and has evolved, as originally envisioned, into a potent agent for social reform. These ideals are fleshed out in their deeds and noble dreams. Some of the prominent members of the Aquila Legis include:
