History

Arabi began as the community known as Stockyard Landing, because of the many stockyards and slaughterhouses located there when such facilities were banned within the city limits of New Orleans. Around the turn of the 20th Century, Arabi was the home of many gambling halls along Friscoville Street, again because such places had been banned in the city limits. These establishments continued to operate until the early 1950s, when they were shut down by local law enforcement.

The St. Bernard Voice, a local paper, began publishing in the late 19th century, and still is produced from a small building on Mehle Street, near the Mississippi river in what was the original settlement. Most of the area was declared a Historical District in the 1970s, including the remains of the Lebeau Plantation, as well as the original St. Bernard Jail.

On August 29, 2005, the massive storm surge caused by Hurricane Katrina flooded almost the entire town of Arabi, with water reaching as high as 20 + feet in some areas. Only a small area of the town close to the Mississippi River levee escaped complete inundation. Many of the homes there are said to be unsavable and will have to be destroyed and re-built.

As of January 1, 2006, many of the local inhabitants had begun rebuilding their homes and businesses. It remains to be seen how the town revives from the destruction.
