Formerly called Freguesia do Brejo Alegre, the settlement was made the seat of a municipality in 1882 and was elevated to city rank in 1888.

Araguari's main source of income is from the large herds of cattle raised in the hinterlands, where rice, soybeans, corn (maize), citrus fruits, tomatoes, feijão (beans), and mandioca (manioc) are also cultivated. In recent years the region has become one of the most important coffee-growing areas in the country and there is an annual coffee fair.

There are five hospitals and clinics in the city and two campuses of regional universities.

On the northern boundary of the municipality is an immense complex of hydroelectric power stations (Emborcação and Miranda), which form several lakes. In addition to the energy supplied these are great tourist attractions, providing oportunities for fishing and the practice of water sports. The project’s aim is to reduce environmental impacts in the surroundings of the Araguari landfill and promote the separation of waste material in such a manner as to allow for its future commercialization.
Cemig’s goal is to recycle the waste and then turn all the material in to paper collectors who, with the help of the Araguari City Hall, are organizing their activity.
A remarkable outcome of this activity is the construction of a warehouse in which the necessary infrastructure to separate and press the waste has been installed, thus allowing for its commercialization.
