Aras, Araks, Arax, Araxes, or Araz (Persian: ارس, Azerbaijani: Araz), is a river rising in Anatolia in Turkey, flowing along the Turkey-Armenia border, then along the Iran border, entering Azerbaijan, and falling into Kura river as a right tributary. Total length is about 600 miles.
Aras was chosen as the border limit between Persia and Russia in the Treaty of Golestan in 1813 by which the whole area north of that river was cut off from Iran and annexed to Russia. Iran and the Soviet Union later built a joint dam on this river at Poldasht area.
Arax was the leading sire at Tersk for the ten years he he stood there, siring 101 foals, of which 11 sons and 23 daughters were registered.
The Arax line was carried on briefly by Namek (x Neposeda by Priboj), then by Nabeg, a bay stallion foaled in 1966 (out of the noted Nomenklatura by Naseem) until his death in 1978.
Arax was transferred to the Tersk stud when he was six as the result of a trade with Poland for a number of mares.
