Encyclopedia > Arcas

Arcas is a character from Greek Mythology, being the son of the God Zeus (The God of Thunder and the lord over all Gods) and Callisto (The Goddess of the Great Bear, also known as Ursa Major). This is not so much a documentary as it is a story, as mythology cannot be backed up by undisputable evidence.

Callisto was a deity of the God Artemis. Zeus, being the flirtatious and insatiable God that he is, decided that he wanted her. As she would not be with anyone but Artemis, Zeus cunningly disguised himself as Artemis and took her out for dinner, resulting with him having his way with her and making a baby which was later called Arcas.

Hera (Zeus' wife), got jealous, and in anger, turned Callisto into a bear. She would have done the same or worse to her son, had Zeus not hid Arcas in Arcadia. There Arcas safely lived until one day, during one of the court feasts help by King Lycaos, the King took Arcas and cut him up into small little pieces.

He then said to Zeus 'If you think that you are so clever, make your son whole and un-harmed'. At this Zeus went crazy, he just went berserk. He made Arcas whole and better and then directed his rage upon Lycaos and turned him into the first Werewolf.

After that, Arcas went on to become the new king of Arcadia, and the country's greatest hunter. One day when Arcas went hunting in the woods, he came across a bear who happened to be his mother. Seeing her son after so long, she went forth to give him a hug. Not knowing that the bear was his mother, he got confused and shot the bear with an arrow.

Zeus, taking pity upon the two, decided to put them both up in the heaven, and they are now referred to as the Big and Little Dipper. When Artemis heard of the news, she got pissed, and asked Thethys to nail them in a certain place, so that despite the continuos rotation of the earth around the sun, the constellation would never sink below the horizon and receive water.
