Population centres
The history
The three villages Arcen, Lomm and Velden have a stirring history.
- During the 80-year war the villages were repeatedly occupied by Spanish forces.
- The villages were captured by the Prussians
- They were incorporated by Austria.
- In 1794 the French came and stayed 20 years.
- In 1815 they became temporary a part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (Koninkrijk der Nederlanden) under King Willem I.
- Limburg joined the Belgian revolution (Belgische opstand) in 1830. The inhabitants where Belgian until 1839.
- After this the area was added to the Calvinistic Netherlands as "Hertogdom Limburg"
Up until the 20e century the Dutch "Above the Moerdijk" (this is the part geographically above the three great rivers in the Netherlands, more precise the provinces North-Holland and South-Holland, didn't consider the area worth while. Later integration started and the people from Arcen-en-Velden felt like real Dutch. But the connection with especially the German neighbours was still strong. During WWII the bond lessened. The Eighty Years War, or Dutch Revolt from 1568 to 1648 was the secession war in which the proto-Netherlands first became an independent country. ...
