The ArchaeologicalInstitute of America (AIA) is North America's oldest and largest organization devoted to the world of archaeology with more than 8,500 members belonging to 104 AIA societies in the United States, Canada, and overseas, united by a shared passion for archaeology and its role in furthering human knowledge.
The ArchaeologicalInstitute of America (AIA) notes with approval the moratorium on the acquisition of undocumented antiquities declared by the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) on April 16, 2007, which will remain in effect while the IMA "evaluates and reframes" its current policies on the collection of antiquities and ancient art.
The AIA's fourth Society Workshop, held at the Annual Meeting in San Diego, focused on "The Bricks and Mortar of the AIA," with speakers from the national AIA office and societies offering suggestions to attendees on building a successful organization.

The ArchaeologicalInstitute of America was founded in May 1879, to promote and direct archaeological investigation and research, whether sending out specific expeditions from the Institute or by aiding independent explorers, and to publish the results of these discoveries.
Yet even in the earliest days within the AIA, this practice was condemned: “…the goal of acquiring antiquities as an end in itself was problematic to Executive Committee member Francis Parkman…[who] asserted that the purpose of the AIA was ‘the acquisition of Knowledge and not the acquisition of objects or works of art’…” [Allen 2002].
