This Hungarian archdiocese is rare (not unique, compare Belgium's primas Mechelen-Brussels) in the sense that it represents two Hungarian cities, Esztergom and the national capital Budapest.
The two being one diocese is because in Hungary's early history Esztergom -under the German name of Gran- was one of the former capitals of the Hungarian apostolic kingdom (much larger then the present republic, roughly the eastern half of the Habsburg empire).
Its name was changed from Archdiocese of Esztergom on 31 May 1993.
