His both sons, first Archduke Stephen of Austria and then Joseph the younger (see below), became in turn Palatines of Hungary.


He had several children, most of them born from his third marriage and late in his life. Two of his daughters became prominent:

Joseph the younger became the successor of his elder half-brother Archduke Stephen as Palatine of Hungary.

Their eldest son was Archduke Joseph August of Austria (1872-1962) who became "grandson-in-law" to old Emperor Francis Joseph and a general. He married Augusta of Bavaria whose mother was Archduchess Gisela of Austria, the eldest surviving daughter of late Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi").
