Singer/guitarist Eric Bachmann, guitarist Eric Johnson, bassist Matt Gentling, and drummer Mark Price, all originally from Ashville, NC, formed Archers of Loaf in the early 1990s. Following the success of their independently released single "Wrong", the band signed with Alias records and released their second single "Web in Front", which garnered moderate college radio airplay. The success of "Web In Front" led to the release of Icky Mettle, their first full album, in 1994. "Icky Mettle", with its odd mix of spiky guitar riffs, white noise and tuneful mumbling, was well received and was considered by many critics at the time as being among the top 10 albums of the year. In 1994, the Archers released the EP entitled Vs. The Greatest of All Time. 1995's Vee Vee followed a similar template, still skipping between noise and harmony, seriousness and absurdity, but sounding more well-rounded and better produced, most notably on the track Harnessed in Slums, which became another hit on college radio. In 1996 the band released The Speed of Cattle, a collection of B-sides, singles, and John Peel session tracks. In recorded music, the terms A-side and B-side refer to the two sides of 7 inch vinyl records on which singles have been released since the 1950s. ...

Their third studio album, 1996's All the Nation's Airports, was more sonically sophisticated and lyrically complex than the band's previous efforts. The band toured extensively in support of the record, to limited mass commercial success. The band's final LP, White Trash Heroes, stood apart from their other releases, sounding much more melancholic and mature. With an increased use of keyboards and even drum machines, the album deviated drastically from their first three albums as Bachmann explored his darker, moodier, and quirkier songwriting abilities. During the tour supporting White Trash Heroes, Eric Johnson missed several dates due to his day job's work schedule. Brian Causey, guitarist for Man or Astroman? and friend of the band, filled in for the missing Johnson. Man or Astro-man? were an anachronistic band of the 1990s that fused the surf rock style of the early 1960s with the sound of Sonic Youth, the look of Devo, science fiction themes and audio samples, obscure electronic devices (such as theremins and tesla coils), and high-energy live...
The band amicably split in late 1998, with Bachmann moving on to multiple solo projects such as Crooked Fingers. Gentling went on to, among other things, provide extra instrumentation on tour with another North Carolina-bred band, Superchunk.
