In the early 1970s Schenk dominated international speed skating. Schenk brak bovendien enkele psychologische barrières: hij was de eerste die onder de 2 minuten reed op de 1.500 meter en de eerste onder de 15 minuten op de 10.000 meter.
In het jargon van sporthistorici bestaat nog steeds het begrip "Ard en Keessie-effect", waar Ard Schenk en Kees Verkerk hun naam aan hebben gegeven.
Schenk merkte op een ochtend bij het opstaan dat er iets niet in orde was.
