Ard che was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the province of Vivarais.
Geography
The department is part of the current region of Rhone-Alpes and is surrounded by the French departments of Dr me, Vaucluse, Gard, Loz re, Haute-Loire, and Is re.
Demographics
The inhabitants of the department are called Ard chois.
Culture
With its rivers and streams, Ard che has become a favorite place for canoe and kayak enthusiasts from around the world. Ard che contains a part of the C vennes National Park.

The Ardeche Gorge is situated less than one hours drive to the North West of the Provencial town of Avignon - nearby the junction between the A7, A8, and A9 autoroutes.
Campsites abound in the Ardecheregion but for those wanting a little more comfort there are plenty of Gites to be hired in and around the Vallee De L'Ardeche.
Intrinsic to climbing trips in the Ardeche, the rest day activities are not to be missed.
After the Pont d'Arc, a natural arch which is 60 metres high, the Ardeche river flows through deep gorges flanked by cliffs which can at times attain 300 metres.
