The town was largely initiated by wheat farmers and wheat transporters in the late 19th century who needed infrastructure to ship their produce accross the Gulf St. Vincent to Port Adelaide. The site was chosen near an old boat landing at Parara. It was named by Governor Fergusson after the seaport in Scotland and it was proclaimed on 5 November 1873. A jetty was constructed in 1878 to accommodate the steamships and sloops used to ship grain. After the depression in the 1930's, the town and its businesses were largely stagnant until a large open-cut dolomite mine was opened by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) in the 1950's for use in its steel manufacture at Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula and Port Kembla in Western Australia. A new one kilometre long jetty was added and at the same time construction was started with grain silos. The new jetty currently services ships loading dolomite and grain. Ardrossan was one of the last towns in Scotland to be made a Burgh in 1846, with a Provost, magistrates and commissioners.
There are three railway stations in Ardrossan: Ardrossan South Beach, which lies close to the boundary with Saltcoats; Ardrossan Town, a station which was in the centre of the town which reopened in 1987 after it had been closed since 1968; and Ardrossan Harbour.
Ardrossan lies in the Ayrshire North and Arran constituency in the House of Commons and Cunninghame North constituency in the Scottish Parliament.

Ardrossan is in the District Council of Yorke Peninsula, the state electorate of Goyder and the federal Division of Wakefield.
