Area Signalling Centre is a term used to describe British Signal Boxes that have been merged into a larger area.
Example : Wimbledon ASC, Based in South West London, at Wimbledon this ASC was built and now controls portions of Railway line Between London Waterloo Station, to Surbiton Station, and London Waterloo to Barnes. The creation of Wimbledon ASC meant the closure of the Following Signal Boxes: Waterloo, Queenstown Road, Clapham Juncton (Windsor and Main Lines)Raynes Park, New Malden, Epsom, East Putney and Banes.
At lineside, the signalling equipment is much simplified by the use of reflectorised marker boards and by the use of train operated hydropneumatic point mechanism.
The signaller uses an emergency key where non-standard operation is required, use of the emergency procedure is authorised by the controller.
In modern power signalling systems the benefits of centralised control are achieved by remote operation of the signals and points from the central signallingcentre.
The areas with regular problems were identified in old CBD area, slums and industrial areas where generation is exceeding collection (comm./residential) leading to scattered dumps and along the road sides/open lands.
