History

Area code 214 was the original area code for the Dallas area (the Fort Worth portion of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex was assigned area code 817). Calls between the 214 and 817 area codes were long distance, except for assigned "extended metro" exchanges (which cost more than regular phone service) and certain 214 exchanges could call bordering 817 exchanges without incurring long distance charges. Some 214 numbers in outlying areas would incur a long distance charge. The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex encompasses the metropolitan divisions of Dallas–Plano–Irving and Fort Worth–Arlington, within the U.S. state of Texas. ...

Due to the growth of the Dallas area, area code 903 was assigned for east and northeast Texas and split from the 214 code in November 1990.

Later growth resulted in area code 972 being assigned to the Dallas suburban areas in April 1997, with 214 retained for the city of Dallas proper. 214 and 972 numbers could call each other for the most part without incurring charges. However, ten-digit dialing became mandatory at this point.

When area code 469 was added a mere 16 months later (December 1998), the 972/214 split was discontinued and all three area codes were overlayed with each other. Thus, a customer could possibly have phones in all three area codes.
