The new 231areacode will be split from the area covered by the 616code, along a line drawn roughly along the northern borders of Ottawa, Kent and Ionia counties.
The new areacode was necessary due to a dwindling supply of phone numbers, thanks to faxes, cell phones and other devices, said Rebecca Barnhart, a spokeswoman for Lockeed Martin IMS.
Lockheed Martin is the company chosen by the federal government to oversee the assignment of areacodes nationwide.
A new areacode is needed because the state is rapidly using up prefix codes - the three-digit combinations that are the first part of a seven-digit phone number - in areacode616.
Subsequent exhaust of the 616 and 231codes is currently forecasted to occur in approximately five and twelve years, respectively.
Areacode relief activities for the 616 and 231areacodes are administered by NeuStar, Inc., who was selected by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve as the North American Number Plan Administrator (NANPA).
