Encyclopedia > Area code 438

United Kingdom (UK) Telephone (STD) Codes 01438 and 01920

This the Knebworth Charge Group. This is a split Charge Group with 01438 covering the western and larger part: Stevenage and its dependants and 01920 the remainder: Ware and its dependants.

These codes were originally published as '0HE8 Stevenage (HErtfordshire)' and '0WA0 WAre', etc. (See this article re the change from alpha to numeric and the addition of a 1.)

Knebworth was a dependant of Stevenage and gave its name to the group because it was deemed to be the centre of the area. (It is not known whether Knebworth exchange has closed or merely lost its name.)

Exchange names which still exist in the 01438 group are: Benington, Bulls Green, Kimpton, Shephall, Stevenage, Tewin, Walkern, Welwyn and Whitwell (Herts).

In the 01920 group the exchange names are: Dane End and Ware.
