The new areacode overlays the same boundaries as the current 503areacode, except for the coastal communities in Clatsop and Tillamook counties.
Only persons within the 503areacode requiring a new phone number will be assigned the new areacode of 971, and only after a telephone provider’s allocated 503 numbers have all been assigned to customers.
The existing 503areacode and Portland are not in that situation.
The 971 areacode is the first overlay for the state and was approved by the Oregon Public Utilities Commission (OPUC) on April 20.
Customers within the 503areacode, except in the coastal communities, are encouraged to begin dialing 10 digits on all calls starting in July, to get used to the new dialing plan for the 503 and 971 areacodes.
Joe Cocke, NANPA's senior areacode relief planner for the Western Region, including Oregon, said the introduction of the new 971 areacode is needed to meet the rapidly growing demand for additional telephone numbers in the 503areacode.
