562 is the telephone area code for much of the Gateway Cities region of southeastern Los Angeles County, California, including Long Beach and surrounding cities such as Cerritos, Lakewood, Downey, Norwalk, and Whittier. Originally this area was part of the 213 area code. When the first split of 213 happened (on 2 November 1991), the area became part of the 310 area code. Part of the problem in 562 stemmed from the long planning period that precedes each new area code's introduction--a process that typically stretches three years.
With 562, debate over the boundaries and other disagreements delayed its introduction for about six months, then demand for numbers surpassed the estimates, which were several years old by then, according to Cocke.
