Area code 609 once covered the entire South Jersey region and reached up into the north. Now, it covers only the central part of the state, and also the entire southern part of the 'Jersey Shore'. This area code was split in 1997 and West Jersey used the area code 856. Many people who live in the 856 area have a cell phone in the area code 609. Lockheed Martin, the national areacode administrator, issued the code to Bell Atlantic after review of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' decision last month to create several million new local numbers by splitting the state's 609 region.
Residents and businesses on the eastern side of the split will retain the 609code, while those on the western side will be given the new 856 areacode.
The new 856 areacode will include all of Salem County, as well as major portions of Gloucester, Camden and Cumberland counties and smaller portions of Burlington and Atlantic counties.
