Prior to 1995, area code 703 in fact served the entire northern and western regions of Virginia—from Arlington in the north down through Blacksburg and the southwestern region of the state—while the central (e.g., Richmond) and southeastern (e.g., Norfolk and Virginia Beach) portions of Virginia were assigned the 804 area code.
