760 was created March 22, 1997 out of what were then parts of the area codes 714 and 619. In less than two years, however, the North American Numbering Plan Administration stated that the area code was running out of telephone numbers, and proposed two possibilities for remedying the situation: a geographic area code split, or an area code overlay. However, the public was dissatisfied with these possibilities, so the state instead examined the possibility of conserving telephone numbers, a great deal of which are currently held but unused by various companies within the area code. A proposed split as of October 2000 was postponed. The study also suggest that they could impose an “overlay” in which new customers would be given the 442 area code.[1]
