The new 224 areacode may be assigned to customers who request new local, cellular and paging, and alarm services.
Starting January 5, 2002 customers in the 847 and 224 areacodes will be required to dial 11 digits (1 + areacode + 7-digit phone number) to complete all calls, both local and long distance.
Since the ICC has extended the number pooling trial from the 847areacode to the other Chicago areacodes, the start dates of the new overlays are still to be determined.
The third proposal is an overlay, in which the new areacode would cover the same territory as the 714 areacode.
The new areacode 949 is projected to have enough numbers to last until 2002 or 2003.
In Illinois, an overlay was recently approved for areacode847 in the northern suburbs of Chicago, but with the explicit option of later expanding the overlay to cover some of the other areacodes in the region.
