Areacode917 is a New York City telephone areacode; it is the standard cellular/pager/voicemail phone areacode for all of the city's boroughs and is an overlay to 212, 347, 646 and 718.
Although 917 was originally established as a service-specific areacode available in all of the five boroughs, it is now most commonly associated with the borough of Manhattan.
In Manhattan, however, areacode646 is beginning to overtake this role, as is likewise the case with areacode 347 in the outer boroughs.
Rather than split into the new areacode, however, the city of Dixon asked to be realigned into the adjacent 707 areacode, since Dixon is the only community in Solano County that was not already in 707.
This method of relief was used in 1997 for areacode 206 in Washington and areacodes 817 and 210 in Texas.
