Before requiring the residents and businesses of the 949areacode to undergo another areacode change, the CPUC recognized the necessity of determining the number of telephone numbers that are in use and the number yet to be used.
The 949areacode is being created through a geographic split of the 714 areacode approved by the Public Utilities Commission on February 5, 1997.
The new 949areacode, which will become California's 20th areacode, is needed to meet the rapidly growing demand for additional phone numbers in the 714 areacode and across the state.
The new 949areacode is projected to accommodate the need for new phone numbers for 18 to 22 years while the remaining 714 areacode is expected to last four to five years.
