Area code 972 was assigned to the Dallas suburban areas in April 1997, with 214 retained for the city of Dallas proper, due to the growth of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. 214 and 972 numbers could call each other for the most part without incurring charges. However, ten-digit dialing became mandatory at this point. The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex encompasses the metropolitan divisions of Dallas–Plano–Irving and Fort Worth–Arlington, within the U.S. state of Texas. ...

When area code 469 was added a mere 16 months later (December 1998), the 972/214 split was discontinued and all three area codes were overlayed with each other. Thus, a customer could possibly have phones in all three area codes.
