Area code 973 is a North American Numbering Plan area code for Northern New Jersey that covers portions of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic and Sussex Counties. It was formed in 1997 when the Area code 201 was split. In 2001, the 862 area code was created to overlay the 973 area code, making 10-digit dialing mandatory. Area code 201 is a telephone area code for the state of New Jersey covering Hudson and Bergen Counties, and part of Essex and Passaic Counties.
The 201 area code was the first area code to be assigned in the United States; while it was part of the original set of area codes assigned to the U.S. in 1947, this area code was not placed into service until 1951.
