Encyclopedia > Area codes in the Caribbean

The Area codes in the Caribbean in the North American Numbering Plan was formerly area code 809, which was first deployed in 1958, covering much of the British West Indies in the Caribbean Basin plus Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico until the mid-1990s. With the advent and growth of fax machines, mobile phones, computers, and pagers in the region, the entire 809 block of seven-digit numbers was almost entirely allocated. The solution was to add more area codes for each of the territories in the West Indies and Bermuda; as a result, multiple nation-states no longer are grouped solely within the 809 area code. The only island to still utilize the legacy 809 area code today is the Dominican Republic. The divested parts of the former 809 area code now have their own new area codes.
