He was the son of Duke Liutprand, whom he succeeded in 758. He was the duke when Charlemagne conquered Lombardy in 774. At first, he tried to claim the kingship, but settled for mere independence of other kings and emperors. He refused to submit to Charles, and was left unmolested. However, in 787, Charles went down and besieged Salerno. Arechis submitted to Frankish suzerainty. He died five years later in 792 and was succeeded by his son, Grimoald, who quickly proclaimed himself independent and successfully resisted the Franks.
