In 1999 he received the Prize of the Mex-Am Foundation for Artistic Residences in Vermont Studio Center, USA, in 2000 the Prize of the XX Young Art National Reunion in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and the Prize of the First National Biennial of Engraving "Rufino Tamayo" in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Among his many solo exhibitions in Mexico and other countries are: in 2002 one for the Abel fur Neue Kunst Gallery in Berlin, Germany, and in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France.
During 2000 he presented "ArenaMexico" in the Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, and in the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca; and in 1997, "Resistencia Florida" in the Casa de las Américas, Havana, Cuba.
Arena said Mexico was given a huge advantage by playing the entire tournament at its home stadium as well as in the high altitude to which its opponents must adapt.
Arena was also unhappy during last month's Confederations Cup when the U.S. had to play its three group matches in five days, compiling a 0-2-1 record.
To a certain degree, Arena brought part of the problem on himself, by being too nice a guy toward MLS coaches whose players he must use in the middle of the MLS season.
