According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 94.1 km˛ (36.3 mi˛). 91.0 km˛ (35.1 mi˛) of it is land and 3.1 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 3.33% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,521 people, 2,293 households, and 1,806 families residing in the township. The population density is 71.7/km˛ (185.7/mi˛). There are 2,493 housing units at an average density of 27.4/km˛ (71.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 97.21% White, 0.23% African American, 0.84% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,293 households out of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.0% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% are non-families. 16.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.18.
In the township the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 34.4% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.9 males.

Hunting for migratory waterfowl with a firearm, or the possession of a firearm for the purpose of hunting migratory waterfowl on the waters of Byram lake in Fenton township, Genesee county, or within 300 feet from the shore thereof, is prohibited.
Hunting with, or the discharge of, a firearm is unlawful on the waters of Marl lake and within 450 feet of the water's edge, sections 32 and 33, T5N, R6E, Fenton township, Genesee county.
