Argonia is a city located in Sumner County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 534.


On April 4, 1887 Susanna Medora Salter was elected mayor of Argonia becoming the first female mayor in the United States.

Geography

Argonia is located at 37°15'55" North, 97°45'58" West (37.265299, _97.766123)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.7 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 534 people, 225 households, and 146 families residing in the city. The population density is 317.2/km˛ (818.4/mi˛). There are 255 housing units at an average density of 151.5/km˛ (390.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 96.82% White, 0.37% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 2.43% from two or more races. 0.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 225 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $30,125, and the median income for a family is $38,625. Males have a median income of $30,938 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,060. 8.8% of the population and 8.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.5% of those under the age of 18 and 13.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

THE TOWN OF ARGONIA in Sumner county, Kansas, became nationally and internationally known in 1887 when the voters of that little Quaker village, with a population of less than five hundred, elected the first woman mayor in America.
This is the first time a woman has held that office in Kansas, and we are glad that the "innovation" is made in the person of one who will fill that office with credit to herself and sex, and satisfaction to her townspeople.
She is an officer in the Argonia W.C.T.U., much interested in the enforcement of the prohibitory law, and in the study of the best means of suppressing and eradicating the vices that beset our cities.
