Ariton is a town located in Dale County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 772.

Geography

Ariton is located at 31°35'54" North, 85°43'8" West (31.598204, _85.718761)¹.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.1 km² (5.1 mi²). 13.1 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 772 people, 306 households, and 220 families residing in the town. The population density is 58.8/km² (152.3/mi²). There are 335 housing units at an average density of 25.5/km² (66.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 69.30% White, 29.27% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 306 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 20.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 84.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $21,083, and the median income for a family is $25,781. Males have a median income of $27,250 versus $17,639 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,502. 25.9% of the population and 25.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.5% of those under the age of 18 and 22.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
