The Outlaws began their history in San Diego as a franchise awarded to William Tatham, though the team never played a game there. The team was unable to acquire access to San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium for its games, and summarily relocated to Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma for its inaugural 1984 season as the Oklahoma Outlaws. The team played in the stadium now known as Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (Norman) and Skelly Stadium (Tulsa). Following a 1984 season which saw significant financial losses, Tatham merged the club with the Arizona Wranglers for the 1985 season, creating the Arizona Outlaws.
