Route description

Its northern terminus is at Interstate 10 in Buckeye, Arizona; its southern terminus lies at the Mexican border near Lukeville, Arizona where it feeds into Mexican Federal Highway 8 near Sonoita, Sonora after a border crossing. It passes through Gila Bend, where it meets Interstate 8, Ajo, and Why at its intersection with Arizona State Route 86. Between Gila Bend and Ajo it passes through the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range, named in honor of the long-time Republican Senator from Arizona, Air Force General, and 1964 Republican candidate for President of the United States. On the border, the southernmost miles of SR 85 traverse Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. History

Historically, SR 85 only extended as far north as Gila Bend. As the old, indirect US 80 was removed from Arizona, SR 85 was extended north on a new alignment to Buckeye and extended east to Phoenix. Historic/Old US 80 still exists between Gila Bend and Buckeye. When Interstate 10 was completed as far west as Buckeye, SR 85 was truncated between Phoenix and Buckeye and was diverted to its current terminus on Interstate 10. Freeway upgrades

The segment of SR 85 between Buckeye and Gila Bend is a connector between Interstate 8 and Interstate 10, and serves both as a connector from Interstate 8 from San Diego, California to Phoenix and as a long-distance bypass of Phoenix for through travelers, including cross-country Los Angeles traffic. This segment is currently being twinned to become a divided highway, and in the future is slated to become a freeway. Some parts of the four-lane road are already completed.
