Arkoma is a town located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,180.

Geography

Arkoma is located at 35°20'58" North, 94°26'15" West (35.349516, _94.437558)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.3 km˛ (3.6 mi˛). 9.1 km˛ (3.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.23% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,180 people, 877 households, and 596 families residing in the town. The population density is 239.8/km˛ (620.7/mi˛). There are 975 housing units at an average density of 107.3/km˛ (277.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 89.22% White, 0.41% African American, 5.78% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 3.39% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 877 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.97.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $23,718, and the median income for a family is $31,500. Males have a median income of $24,200 versus $17,104 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,467. 20.1% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 18.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


School

Arkoma Schools Superintendent is Katie Blagg (2004). The Arkoma sport teams are also called "Arkoma Mustangs". In the season 2003-2004 Arkoma played Football eight-man-football again, after a 17 year break. Their 2003 record: 8-2
