General

In the course of Peggy's research into the archives of the Arlen Bystander, it was discovered that the town was thought to have been founded by prostitutes and called Harlottown. (See episode of the same name). It eventually became known as "Harlen", then soon "Arlen". Like most fictional towns, Arlen is not exclusively based on any one specific location. ZIP codes, area codes, and landmarks are used only when an episode calls for them, and are generally not consistent (for example, in "Raise the Steaks", the Hills' address on a letter is 123 Rainey St. in Arlen, TX but the zip code, 74301, actually corresponds to Ardmore, OK; however, in the episode entitled "Hank's Dirty Laundry," address labels being printed in one scene indicate the ZIP code for Arlen is 78701, which actually corresponds to Austin, TX). The location of Arlen is said in one episode to be in South Texas, though a series of maps do indicate a location near Austin. Show creator Mike Judge grew up in Garland, Texas, which bears numerous similarities to Arlen.Characters refer to Austin and Houston as if they are nearby. Hank's preference for Dallas-based sports teams seems to imply that Arlen actually lies within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, although the Dallas Cowboys have a huge fan base covering most of Texas, and there was no football team in Houston between 1997 and 2002. However, on an episode where Hank and Bobby go to the Cowboys training camp in Wichita Falls, they try to get the Cowboys to come train in Arlen, which is in South Texas, possibly near San Antonio. The Hills rely on Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport for their air travel. The Hills live on Rainey Street in Arlen; there is a Rainey Street in Austin (ZIP code 78701), which is 213 miles from Dallas/Ft Worth Airport and is consistent with the information displayed in the episode "Hank's Dirty Laundry." In a Thanksgiving episode, Hank says that it will take them four hours to get to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, approximately. In "Hank and the Great Glass Elevator" it is indicated that I-35 runs near or through Arlen. If Arlen sits near I-35, and within two hours of both Houston and Austin, then Arlen is very near La Grange, Texas, most likely on I-10.
