Dahl was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is of Norwegian descent. After graduating from high school in 1946, she held various jobs, including working as a model for a brief period. She began her acting career in 1947, at the age of 19. Her acting career gradually picked up steam, and she reached the peak of her popularity and success in the 1950s. Dahl met the famous movie star Lex Barker in the early 1950s, and in 1952, Dahl and Barker got married. A few years later she and Barker got divorced, and Dahl would go on to marry another Hollywood actor, Fernando Lamas.
