Arlington is a city located in South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 992. The city is located partially within Brookings County and partially within Kingsbury County.


Geography

Arlington is located at 44°21'52" North, 97°8'5" West (44.364322, _97.134646)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 km² (1.6 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 992 people, 424 households, and 262 families residing in the city. The population density is 245.5/km² (635.6/mi²). There are 473 housing units at an average density of 117.1/km² (303.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.49% White, 0.00% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 424 households out of which 25.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 36.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,688, and the median income for a family is $43,813. Males have a median income of $29,083 versus $19,531 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,858. 4.4% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
