Armagh Observatory is a modern astronomical research institute with a rich heritage, based in Armagh, Northern Ireland. Around 25 astronomers are actively studying Stellar Astrophysics, the Sun, Solar System astronomy, and the Earth's climate. The Observatory is located close to the centre of the City of Armagh together with the Armagh Planetarium in approximately 14 acres of attractive, landscaped grounds known as the Armagh Astropark, and was founded in 1790 by the then Archbishop of Armagh, Richard Robinson. The Observatory Grounds and Astropark are reached through the main entrance to the Observatory on the North-East corner of the Mall, close to the Courthouse and the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum. The Grounds and Astropark are open during working hours all year round. There are scale models of the Solar System and the Universe, two sundials and historic telescopes, as well as telescope domes and other outdoor exhibits (see http://star.arm.ac.uk/Astropark/). A new facility, the Human Orrery (see http://star.arm.ac.uk/orrery/), is located close to the main building of the modern Observatory. The Armagh Observatory is not to be confused with the [[Armagh Planetarium], the world-renowned astronomical educational establishment and visitor centre, founded in 1968 by Dr Eric Mervyn Lindsay, seventh director of the Armagh Observatory, and under the same overall management.
