Born in Mayagüez to Cuban immigrants who resettled in Puerto Rico, Riesco was raised in San Juan where he attended Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola. After graduating from high school, he relocated to New York City where he began to work in local and off-Broadway productions before launching his film career.
