History
The army was created on October 12, 1862 composed of forces from the Dist. of Southwest Missouri, consisting of three divisions at its largest. General John M. Schofield was the army's first commander. The Battle of Prairie Grove in 1862 was the army's finest moment of the war. General Schofield was still officially in command of the army but at the battle General Blunt was in tactical command in the field but still personally commanded his 1st Division. General Francis J. Herron officially replaced Schofield as commander in March, 1863.
