The Army of the West, a unit of the Union Army during the American Civil War, was created on Jan 29, 1862. It was composed mostly of Missouri State Guards. The total number of men was 20,000, commanded by Major-General Earl Van Dorn. The army performed fairly well and won the battle of Wilson's Creek where Union General Lyon was killed.
