Arnold Steinhardt is a violinist who is best known as the first violin of the Guarneri String Quartet. The Guarneri Quartet is an American string quartet founded in 1964, comprised as of 2005 of Arnold Steinhardt (1st violin), John Dalley (2nd violin), Michael Tree (viola), and Peter Wiley, cello. ...


He was born in 1937 in Los Angeles. His debut was with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 14. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Ivan Galamian and with Josef Szigeti. In 1958 he won the Leventritt International Violin competition. He has also extensively performed as a soloist. He lives in New York City, and the author of Indivisible by Four: A String Quartet in Pursuit of Harmony, an account of his life in the string quartet. Under Leon Kirchner, Earl Kim (both protégés of Arnold Schoenberg) and Ivan Tcherepnin, he took his MA (1979) and Ph.D. (1980) in composition, and was appointed to the faculty for a four year period.
During this time, his music was premiered by the Bach Society Orchestra, the Akron Symphony under Louis Lane, on the Fromm Contemporary Music Series, and on the Bösendorfer Concert Series in New York.
