Arolsen is a small town in northern Hesse and the baroque 18th century residence of the Princes of Waldeck_Pyrmont, a former principality in Hesse, Germany. the castle was built in the period 1713_1728 according to plans by Fürst Friedrich Anton Ulrich zu Waldeck (1676-1728).

Arolsen is first documented in 1131 when an Augustinian nunnery was established there.
From 1918 to 1929 Arolsen was capital of the Free State of Waldeck-Pyrmont (after 1922: Free State of Waldeck), which was subsequently incorporated into Prussia.

Arolsen was the birthplace of the sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch (1777-1857) and the painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1804-74).
