Falar-se da tapeçaria alentejana é imediatamente associado aos magnificentes trabalhos bordados a ponto de Arraiolos, que ornamentaram outrora o chão de Palácios, igrejas e casas senhoriais e depois, democratizaram e hoje correm mundo, enriquecendo a decoração de muitos espaços públicos e habitações particulares.
Arraiolos teria sido um dos locais de acolhimento de famílias mouriscas, que depois de 1496, foram expulsas da mouraria de Lisboa por ordem de D. Manuel I. Segundo o mesmo autor, algumas dessas famílias rumaram para Espanha, outras para o Norte de África.
