The distillery of the Isle of Arran was founded by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas and of the House of Campbell. The spirit produced in the distillery has officially been called "whisky" since the summer of 1998. To celebrate this event, a limited bottling has been released, to restore an ancient tradition. Indeed, 150 years ago whisky was already being produced on the Isle of Islay, which is still the home of several notable distilleries. The Isle of Arran is sometimes called "Scotland in miniature" because all the variety of landscapes found in Scotland are present on this small island, like mountains, plains, lakes, valleys and royal castles. Single Malt Scotch Whisky Information - scotchwhisky.net (136 words)
A Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the product of one specific distillery and has not been mixed with whisky from any other distilleries.
The greatest concentration of malt whisky distilleries can be found in the Speyside region of north-east Scotland, with Highland, Lowland and Islay being the other main malt whisky producing zones.
Each of these regions has its own particular distinctive style of malt whisky and although it is not possible for two malts to be identical, even if the distilleries that produce them happen to stand side by side, it is usually possible to distinguish in which region of Scotland a particular whisky was made.
Isle of Arran Distillers Arran Malt Whisky (387 words)
Before the tax on malt in 1725, when illicit distilling became common, farming clachans on the island had made their own pot-still whisky with a rustic method which was used throughout the Highlands.
It was this illegal Arran whisky which the islanders carried in barrels down to the shore and loaded into boats, to be ferried across to the mainland to use as barter for other necessities.
The new Isle of Arran distillery commemorates the death of illicit whisky distiller, Lachie, in a huge mural which covers an entire wall in the £1m visitor centre.
