Dixon says she is "an upbeat romantic, the optimist." She's a 47-year-old lawyer who raised a family and built a successful career before running for the city's highest office.
Dixon's father taught her that "the most attractive women are very intelligent, strong-willed Black women--the fiery type." He gave her Black's Law Dictionary for her birthday when she was still a young girl--more than a subtle hint that she was expected to follow in his footsteps.
Dixon was comfortably molded into a wooden rocker she had positioned to catch the morning sun as it streamed into the living room of her simply decorated five-bedroom split-level home, nestled in one of Washington's more expensive, woodsy areas.

Pratt directed the failed 1982 mayoral campaign of Patricia Roberts Harris and married Arrington Dixon, a Democrat on the DC city council.
She is the mother of two adult daughters, Drew Dixon Williams and Aimee Dixon and the grandmother of Dixon Bathrus Williams, who was born in New York City in September 2004.
